***This is an energy exchange. My hope is for you to share this practice with your loved ones, and honour the lineage while doing so. If you'd rather donate, I'd appreciate if you could support the efforts of Oxfam international: https://www.oxfam.org/en.
Oxfam's mission: Oxfam is a global movement of people, working together to end the injustice of poverty. That means we tackle the inequality that keeps people poor. Together, we save, protect and rebuild lives when disaster strikes. We help people build better lives for themselves, and for others. we take on issues like land rights, climate change and discrimination against women. And we won’t stop until every person on the planet can enjoy life free from poverty.
And in the spirit of giving, if there's anything you're learning about or have recently discovered (idea, book, podcast, course, teacher) that you feel might resonate, I welcome the share.
I'm so excited to share my practice of himalayan vedantic breathwork (pranayama and kriya-kundalini yoga) with you. I was fortunate to travel to the birth-region of breathwork/yoga late last year and what I learned, and now teach, was so transformative that I wouldn't feel right not sharing it immediately with my vibrant sisters from around the world.
We all deserve to have access to this ancient technology.
During my training, I was most attracted to the practices of pranayama, kriya and mantra/naad yoga. These practices activate our energetic body which represents the life force energy that flows through us. The practices involve a mix of gentle and forceful breathing and deep meditation, often with the internal retention of oxygen or external retention (finding stillness after emptying our lungs). They involve repetition for at least 90 seconds with intense concentration by focussing our eyes inward on the center of our forehead (third eye). Often we'll use certain hand gestures (mudras) or chant mantras, which are sounds that are deemed universal, like "om," whose vibration elicits a set intention (eg. oneness).
It is said in the ancient scriptures that cultivating breath control in this way allows us to access the subtler dimensions of energy (prana) and connect us to the experience of no mind. With repetition, we can start to access intelligence beyond the head and begin moving to the level of collective consciousness and wisdom. From here we can experience deep realizations, growth and healing.
Knowing this becomes more powerful with consistent practice, my intention is to offer this weekly for you (and me!), sometimes sticking to our current flow, and other times changing things up with more active kriyas, cosmic breaths and longer closing mantras.
To prepare for our session, please find a comfortable seat on the floor, chair or bed. If you can, prop the back of your bum up with a pillow so that your knees are lower than your hips.
To optimize the experience (and so you can hear me clearly), everyone else will be muted and at the end we will spend 5-10 mins sharing, when possible.
